Investing in Daylight Computer
An AI-native consumer tablet designed for deep focus and wellbeing
We are excited to announce our investment in Daylight Computer’s most recent funding round. With this investment we join a cadre of Silicon Valley luminaries who have supported the business to-date as well as our good friends at Generalist Capital.
Daylight Computer is building a healthier, more human-friendly computing device. Built with an AI-native OS, it delivers a distraction-free tool for reading, writing, learning, and creativity.
Screens have quietly become one of the defining challenges of this generation. The average US teenager spends 5+ hours a day in front of screens. This contributes to disrupted sleep, strained eyesight, nervous-system overstimulation, and chronic fatigue. Note: we will leave the impact of social media (where teens spend almost 30% of their waking time) for another post.
Despite the burgeoning US wellness market, almost all phone/tablet screen displays use some form of backlit LED or OLED technology. Mainstream e-readers are still using outdated e-ink technology which, while better for some of the concerns noted above, remains quite limiting. E-ink lacks the functionality to deliver ‘true responsiveness’ and hardware devices that use it are built on foundational operating systems that are closed - i.e. offer limited (if any) third party integrations. Daylight is building the first, modern alternative - a world-class device that is truly responsive, open, beautiful, and much better for our health.
At its core, Daylight leverages its unique 'Live Paper' technology (60 FPS, reflective liquid crystal display) to deliver the natural feel of paper, eliminating glare, blue-light emission, and eye strain while maintaining full motion and grayscale. The device runs on Sol:OS, a distraction free OS optimized for learning, writing, and deep work. Users can build focus routines, read and annotate, and leverage AI features built directly into the O/S to interact natively with the hardware. It also has a curated app store via Google Play giving users freedom within a purpose-built environment. There is a child-specific option (Daylight Kids) and in the future, the company plans to leverage its LivePaper technology into other electronic form factors.
Founder and CEO Anjan Katta has spent 6 years bootstrapping the company, funding R&D with his own savings to prove the physics and bring the first prototype to life. What began as a personal pursuit to reduce his own screen-induced anxiety has evolved into his life’s work.
We are honored to partner with Anjan and the rest of the Daylight team as they redefine what it means to build human-centric devices that are grounded in healthier technology consumption.
